It is difficult to find a software product that is never patched or updated. Indeed, as enterprises find their systems under constant attack by determined forces using sophisticated tools which exploit every newly-discovered weakness within the system, patches and updates become more frequent, sometimes more complex, and always more urgent. Your Systems will become vulnerable from the time of discovery of a weakness until successful implementation of a patch or update that corrects the weakness. The duration of this window of vulnerability and the way in which the enterprise responds determine in large part the amount of risk to which the enterprise is exposed.

The goal is to shorten the window of vulnerability as much as practical, and provide tools which can help you reduce the amount of damage attackers can inflict during any window of opportunity.

Let’s state the definition of patch management:

Patch management is the process of securely controlling the acquisition, deployment, accounting, and reporting of software updates for operating systems and applications which reside on various kinds of computing devices, such as workstations, servers, routers, and laptops.

Where Patch management  Fits

Patch management a world-class patch management system, not an entire security suite. The Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) recommends multi-vendor security solutions so that security holes from one vendor are not manifested throughout all levels of the security suite, and we intuitively know that is a good approach. In other words, all elements of the Federal Government, as well as all others who are interested in their own security, are being strongly encouraged to rely on multiple vendors, and especially (in the view of the NSA) smaller vendors who may be nimble enough to add features to satisfy customer needs when the giants of the industry most likely would not.

WHO NEEDS A PATCH?

Most vendors suffer even greater handicaps, and are unable to keep track of an individual device’s configuration (all that stuff above that we need to know) even when they can figure most of it out in the first place or have it given to them.  In some cases that’s simply because they just don’t have a rational method for keeping track of the information, and in a few cases it appears that no attempt is made. In other cases, it’s because they never figure it out in the first place, then toss patches at the device and never follow up to determine whether it was successfully installed. With our Secure Patch Manager, we are able to successfully audit/inventory/catalog and maintain complete records for all devices, and provide meaningful reports.
